I drove through the East Cape for the first time in 1973, shortly after Highway 1 opened Baja Sur to California and the world. Fishing then was mostly a commercial operation from Pangas. In those days, anglers tried to keep this fishing spot a secret.
As I have witnessed the growth and popularity of the region expand, I realized I really missed the East Cape of old. Not too long ago several fellow anglers and I found ourselves looking for a quieter, more serene experience, as in the earlier days, while continuing to enjoy the great fishing available here.
John Ireland, a long time friend, and the proud owner of Rancho Leonero, recently invited me to experience the remoteness and beauty of his "East Cape Jewel", which is located about 42 miles north of the Cabo San Lucas International Airport.

The onsite full-time manager, Gary Barnes-Webb, and his friendly staff, give arriving guests an immediate feeling of "Welcome". Gary, who is a former big game hunting guide and fifth generation South African, moved with his family to the Ranch in 1999.
Guests enjoy three "scrumptious" meals a day, included in the price!
And the views from the dining room are spectacular, too! (Click on these three pictures and see a larger view!)
For activities, choose from sportfishing, diving, kayaking, and snorkeling on and in the water. In addition, you will find desert trails for hiking, as well as guided horseback tours of the area. Van service is also available if guests want to visit the local villages or La Paz or Cabo San Lucas.
The hotel also offers massage therapy, and offers a complete fitness center, with weight training and exercise equipment.
In the "old days" only fishermen frequented this area. Today, all that has changed, and families are the norm. The remoteness of the Ranch, coupled with the staffs' mindfulness of guests' needs, make it a safe place for children. In fact, the location, which is away from all the hustle and bustle of the area, the hospitality and attention to your personal needs, and the great fishing and other outdoor adventures make Rancho Leonero a prime destination for both anglers and families!
